Table Saw Buyers Guide

You can skip the buyers guide and go straight to the Table Saw Reviews here.

Before we get started, it’s important to figure out exactly what kind of table saw you're looking for. If you intend to use a table saw on various work sites and move around frequently, then I would recommend a relatively light saw for transportation purposes.

If you’re looking to do precision woodworking from one location consistently, then you’re probably better off looking at some of the stationary table saws instead.

I’ve put together a list of things to look for in a good portable table saw.

Amperage: When looking at portable table saw specifications, most of the decent saws will be in the 15 amperage range. This amp level seems to offer enough power to get through tough materials without causing any overload to the saw.

RPM (Revolutions per minute): When looking at the RPM specifications, anywhere between 3500 and 5000 is an acceptable range.

Rip Fence: A good rip fence is required for cutting parallel to the edge of a workpiece. For better control you’re better off looking at a longer fence. Ideally you want a rip fence that slides easily, fits securely and locks firmly in place, allowing a perfectly parallel angle with the blade every time.

Dust Collection: During the course of use, table saws will produce a lot of sawdust. I’d suggest looking at the dust collection system reviews for whichever model you’re interested in buying.

Braking system: For efficiency and safety reasons you want a table saw that comes with brakes that stop the blade automatically, so no manual intervention is required. I believe most table saws have this feature. I’m sure most, if not all of the table saws reviewed on this site come with an electric brake as standard.

Weight and Portability: This mostly applies to portable table saws, however, the weight and ease of portability should be a large factor when buying a saw to use on job sites. Especially if you intend to move it around various sites frequently.

Manufacturers and Warranties: I don’t recommend buying a table saw based on the specifications alone, since even the best models can develop faults or arrive defective.

Some of the more trusted manufacturers in the industry are Bosch, DeWALT and Makit. Not only because they produce high-quality products, but also because they stand by their warranties and offer great customer service.

At the end of the day, a warranty is just a piece of paper and some companies choose not to stand by their products. I’d suggest using a trusted manufacturer, or a trusted retailer online, even if you can save a bit of money with a less reputable seller. It will save you a huge headache down the line!

  1. Can the dewalt dw745 take a dado blade?

    • I'm not 100% certain. I've looked into it and according to Dewalt the answer is no, according to most users of the product the answer is no. However, I dug around and one person did mention that one set worked. Nevertheless, I cannot verify this and I don't know the person that made the comment personally.

      • Awesome article.
